A few weeks ago, we talked about putting freedom-oriented columns in newspapers as a means of activism and outreach. This week's action is similar, but it's even easier. Most of you subscribe to email discussion lists. As a matter of fact, most of you are reading this column via email, as opposed to on the web. It is probably safe to say that most of you subscribe to at least some lists that are not specifically "political" -- lists that cater to interests outside of electoral politics and activism, and that focus on narrow interests. Lists for gun owners. Lists for smokers. Lists for discussion of drug issues. Education lists. I don't know how many there are out there, but Free-Market.Net hosts more than 100 on its own and on behalf of its partners, and we have links to 182 more in our directory. It's probably not out of line to suggest that there are a million or more discussion groups (email and web-based) on the Internet. Lists, lists, lists ... all of them touching on issues that you care about not just as libertarians, but as individuals. Now, it's one thing to preach to the choir, and another thing to preach to the public. I can (and do) spend hours commiserating with fellow libertarians about how great our ideas are. You may do so as well. But what about taking those ideas to people who are interested in the issues they apply to, and who may benefit from the perspectives our movement offers? I'm thinking specifically of this column, where applicable, as well as our Policy Spotlights, Freedom Book of the Month and Freedom Page of the Week. All of them are freely available for you to forward to any list. We also have 125 partner organizations, constantly generating content that they would love to see more widely disseminated. This week, start another list. Not an email discussion list, but one of those old-fashioned kinds. Do it on a scratch pad or in your word processor. Make a list of the lists you belong to, and make notes as to what issues are relevant. Tape that list up next to your monitor, and the next time you see a libertarian article that works well with one of the lists you subscribe to, hit "Forward" in your email client. Simple, huh? Maybe you already do this. Maybe I don't need to tell you that you ought to. For some reason, though, I think that some of you just haven't thought of emailing a link to an FFF editorial to "shooterswhoalsocollectstamps-discuss." "Organizing" freedom-lovers is sort of like herding cats. If Free-Market.Net (or any other organization) tried to set up a structure that designated certain lists and certain people to monitor them and forward content to them, it would fall apart in a hurry. But we don't need to do that, because while it may be difficult to "organize" you in that sense, it is quite easy to get you to do the right thing. All I really have to do is put the bug in your ear. Right? See you over on "longhairedgunfreakswhoreadsciencefiction-d." ----- Alternate Actions ----- The Freedom Action of the Week Club: Commit yourself to doing one action per week.
