That's just one of the changes -- for the worse -- that have manifested themselves since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. And it isn't just in the United States. The world is looking more and more like an armed camp full of jumpy people. I'm planning a trip from St. Louis to Atlanta next weekend. Frankly, I haven't yet decided how I'm going to get there. Ten years in the Marine Corps taught me that most troops other than military police are simply not trained to provide security in civilian areas, and I'd rather not be the first guy on my block gunned down by a nervous corporal just because I want to get on an airplane. I thought about the bus ... but who knows if it'll be running? I woke up this morning to reports of a wreck along (wouldn't you know it) the very route I'd be taking, caused by (wouldn't you know it again) a crazed thug with a knife. As of this moment, all interstate bus traffic is at a standstill. My 1982 Honda isn't likely to survive a round trip to Georgia. Amtrak takes too long (it routes through San Antonio, for the love of Pete). Maybe I'll rent a car. Maybe I'll walk. But I digress. We were talking about the airports. Now let's talk about the air_lines_. We're told that "some racial profiling may be necessary" in order for passengers to feel secure. We're told that letting families accompany their departing loved ones to the gate is a "security risk." Thinking about a manicure on that redeye from LA to Boston? Fuhgeddaboudit. When nail clippers are outlawed, only outlaws will have tidy-looking hands. I don't know about you, but I'm not interested in "feeling secure." I want to _be_ secure, and I don't believe that real security requires the sacrifice of my liberties. As a matter of fact, I think that precisely the opposite is true. Project Safe Skies is about secure air travel, not big government feelgood "solutions" that leave us just as exposed to terrorism as before and less free to boot. The site officially takes flight on October 11th, but a plethora of action opportunity exists there already -- and Action of the Week subscribers are "early adopters," right? The site offers numerous suggestions and action opportunities. Do them all, or do the ones that appeal to you. Every little bit helps. And now, I'll turn you over to Project Safe Skies without further ado. Please return your trays to the upright position and fasten your seatbelts.
