The day approaches, and I hope that all of you make a celebration of it. This week (and in subsequent weeks), I want to offer you a few wonderful Bill of Rights Enforcement opportunities that some of our Free-Market.Net partner organizations have put together for you. This installment focuses (and additional ones may as well) mostly on the Second Amendment. My goal, in the near future, is to show you the breadth of the opportunities that our partners and other organizations are making available. Does anyone remember U.S. versus Emerson? This Texas case went to the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which affirmed the individual right to keep and bear arms. That's another milestone that has gone largely unnoticed in the days since September 11th, and a milestone that will have to be defended on appeal. The victim disarmament lobby is furious, and it's likely that they will bring considerable resources to bear in trying to quash the Circuit Court's opinion. Free-Market.Net partners KeepAndBearArms.Com and Citizens of America have joined with other gun rights organizations to create a legal defense fund for Emerson. The page is worth visiting -- this is an issue about which we all need to inform ourselves, and on which we should act accordingly. The two organizations have also teamed up to circulate and promote a "Petition for the Enforcement of the Second Amendment to the Constition of the United States of America," which is just what it sounds like: a request that the Attorney General take on states (in this case California, but signatures from all over are welcome) to prevent enforcement of laws that violate the right to keep and bear arms. Also from KeepAndBearArms comes "Operation Oath," an absolutely grand idea that needs your participation to succeed. In every jurisdiction, officeholders take an oath. That oath almost always includes a promise to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution (at the federal level) or whatever government charter is the empowering instrument of office. "Operation Oath" is about enforcing those oaths of office when they're violated. Finally, Citizens of America has put together a fine batch of print and radio ads promoting respect for the right to keep and bear arms. These are ideal for running in your local media -- and that's what they are there for. Have a look and a listen, and consider helping COA get the word out. The print ads are in PDF format and the audio ads in a variety of formats. There's a world of activism out there. If you can participate in any of these campaigns at any level, you're part of it. See you next week.
