First week of August, 2002:
Join the Operation Self Defense Team

One of the things I most enjoy reading are stories about everyday
people who "strike a blow for freedom" in some fashion. The Joe
Sixpack who refuses to kowtow to the local zoning authorities, the
Jane Everywoman who insists on home schooling her children, the
shotgun-wielding grandma who drives away robbers from her
country store. Everyman. Everywoman. Minding their own business
and taking care of their own business.

And of those stories, the ones that thrill me the most are those
where average guys or gals use their 2nd Amendment rights to
defend themselves, their property or their family. These stories give
me hope that the good ole American "Don't Tread on Me" spirit is
still alive ... and that at least some haven't given in to the
government propaganda of "guns kill, guns bad, give up your guns
and we'll protect you." Every time I see one of these stories, I
forward it to everyone I know, particularly to my lefty buddies, who
seem to agree with me on just about everything except for the right
to keep and bear arms.

The wonderful RKBA organization, KeepAndBearArms.Com, has a
project to collect these stories, stories of average Americans
defending their right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,"
called Operation Self Defense. KeepAndBearArms.Com has a
team of dedicated volunteers who help cover online newspapers
and enter the stories in the KeepAndBearArms.Com database,
where they are available for reading online or by email ... and they
need our help!

A quick look at some of the recent stories gathered by the
KeepAndBearArms.Com "Net Detectives":

7/25/02 CA: Jeweller kills armed robber
7/24/02: GA: Senior woman fends off robbers with shotgun
7/23/02: NV: Woman uses knife and gun to fend off attacker

show the kinds of stories they're looking for. The kind of stories
that make you hold your head a bit higher, stand a bit straighter
and think to yourself "By gosh, if they can do it, so can I." The kind
of stories the gun grabbers don't want publicized.

Project Self Defense volunteer "Net Detectives" commit to
monitoring pre-selected online news resources.
KeepAndBearArms.Com keeps a list of news sources for each
state, which are coded as "needs weekday coverage, needs
weekend coverage, or fully covered." You can check out your state
to see if your "hometown" paper or the major papers in your area
are covered, or pick a totally different state.

To become a "Net Detective," send in the online application form.
(You can choose which news sources to monitor and how often,
and whether you wish to be publicly acknowledged for having found
a story.)

Even if you can't commit to monitoring a news source daily, you
can still submit stories without "joining" the network. See "What
does a Net Detective do?" for instructions on how to submit a
story.

In my first Action of the Week, the Everyday Activist, I suggested
that each of us should take one small action for freedom, every
day, as a part of our every day lives. Joining the
KeepAndBearArms.Com Operation Self Defense Team is one way
to do that.

So, for this week's Action, let's join the "KeepAndBearArms.Com
Team" and commit a few minutes each day to help gather the
stories that will spread the word that the 2nd Amendment still
exists, and that average men and women use it every day to
protect their freedom. In these uncertain times, when it seems that
every week brings us a step closer to a police state, we need all
the reminders we can get of what it means to be a citizen in a
FREE country.

Til next week,

For freedom!

Mary lou
